Hawks Talk Podcast

Johnson students host a podcast called Hawks Talk.

Each episode features our bright students engaging in stimulating conversations with a variety of influential figures, including district principals, support hub staff, and other notable community leaders.

What is Title 1?

A federally funded program whose purpose is to ensure that ALL children have a fair, equal, and significant opportunity to obtain high quality education.

Title 1 allows students who are experiencing academic difficulty, to receive extra help and individual attention during the school day.

School Wide Restorative Practice Program

At Johnson Learning Center we wanted to be among the first to know that we have chosen to be a RESTORATIVE COMMUNITY. Becoming a restorative community means that we will be committed to do things "with" each other.

The school has the aim to invoke the Restorative Practice process through conflict resolution methods and strategies to support the following:

  • Cut down on student infractions, suspensions, and expulsions

  • Unlimited support from the Restorative Practice team

  • Strengthen Social Emotional Learning through Restorative Practice and relationship building

This is accomplished through daily engagement of the following:

  • Using Common Language

  • Promoting "Voice and Choice"

  • Circle Meeting focusing on: Equality, Equity, Safety & Trust, Responsibility, Ownership, Building Relationships, Community Mindset, just to name a few.

Wellness Zone and VIBE Room

At Johnson Learning Center, we have created the Wellness Zone, which provides increased early interventions for students experiencing behavioral, social-emotional or mental health challenges. Our Wellness Zone houses our School Counselors, Restorative Practitioners, Social Worker, Trauma-Informed Specialist, School Psychologist, and a Dean of Students. With this level of service, we can level up and personalize our support and interventions to meet the student's needs.

Within the Wellness Zone, we also have our V.I.B.E. room. V.I.B.E. stands for: Validate your feelings, Invite feedback, Breathe, and Encourage Yourself to be better. Through therapeutic and creative strategies, students are encouraged to self-regulate in the V.I.B.E. Room. Students can VIBE out when overwhelmed, anxious, dysregulated, or need to "get away and take a breather". Think of the V.I.B.E. room as a studio apartment with different areas of engagement. As soon as they walk in, they should feel like they're no longer at school and have been transported to another dimension. The general idea is to provide a safe space inside the building where students can escape with a supportive adult and feel like they can catch a vibe and Be Better enough to return to learning. Students can vibe out at one of six areas in the VIBE room; physical activity area, calming corner, chill area, music and art studios, and gaming area. Students deserve to feel valued, feel important, and feel that adults genuinely care about their well-being, including emotional and mental health.
